Ellis Island Records gives detailed information about the immigrants; e.g., the ship's manifests list the eye and hair color of passengers and the names of the people who arrived together.

FamilySearch.org - Select the SEARCH tab at the top of the page to get a list of searchable records, including Ancestral File, International Genealogical Index, Pedigree Resource File, Social Security Death Index, Vital Records, Family History Web Sites. FamilySearch.org now has the 1880 US census and 1881 British and Canadian census information. Kathy says they're quite useful and easy to search!
